5 Ways to Have a Healthy Morning

Categories: Lifestyle, Wellness|Tags: , , , |

We all know that it’s important to get your ‘beauty sleep’ in order to feel your best in the morning, but what else can we do to start the day feeling ready to take on life? Keep reading to discover 5 ways that you can have a healthy morning to feel refreshed and invigorated!

Drop the Coffee

morning coffee

We completely understand wanting to drink coffee first thing in the morning, but putting the coffee maker on should not be your first move. Even though coffee does provide health benefits when consumed in moderation, drinking it on an empty stomach could cause gastrointestinal issues, nutritional problems, and potentially lead to anxiety/depression by increasing your stress hormones. Not convinced? Researcher’s say that drinking coffee right after waking up actually undermines caffeine’s effect – so if you need it to get you going you may want to hold off a bit, or else your tolerance will continue to increase. The lesson here is that you can still have your coffee, but get something else in your body first.

Drink your water

Hot Lemon Water

Instead of coffee, we recommend drinking a hot water/lemon mix in the morning to help get your body in line. Taking a moment to relax with this beverage will help you maintain your peace after waking up, and asides from helping to detox the body, lemon water also improves digestion, adjusts our body’s acid levels, helps prevent against kidney stones, improves skin, and helps boost your immune system.

Meditate or Sit in Silence

Taking the time to meditate after waking up can serve as a great way to center yourself and organize your thoughts for the day. We want to start our mornings with as little stress as possible, and doing this will certainly help you get into a positive mindset!

Move Your Body

Morning Yoga

Whether you do yoga, go for a quick run, or just do some light stretching, waking up your body helps prepare it for the day and can have a positive effect on our emotions. Getting your blood flowing helps release endorphins which will help you feel more energized, wake up your metabolism, and help you burn calories in addition to bettering your mood!

Eat

Just like your mom told you to eat your breakfast before school, we’re telling you to eat breakfast before work. Not sure what qualifies as a balanced breakfast?

See our tips below:

Make sure you have a good source of protein (eggs, turkey bacon, Greek yogurt, protein shake). Include fruit for a healthy dose of fiber, vitamins, and potassium. Eat your carbs! Our bodies need carbs to run properly, so don’t be afraid of having a piece of whole wheat toast or oatmeal to give your body the energy it needs.

Merging the Worlds of Food & Design

Categories: Food, Lifestyle|Tags: , , , , |

Food and design are two areas of life that people often draw inspiration from. When in the kitchen, we seek to create dishes that pull on flavors we know and love, and when coming up with new recipes chefs often go to art, design, and nature for their inspiration. Artists and designers alike draw from similar sources of inspiration as well when designing a space. They focus on certain colors and textures present in their surrounding environments to draw ideas from, and then implement those ideas into their space.

Dietlind Wolf sought to showcase this unique relationship in her series of photos that literally merge food, art, and design together. By using watercolor illustrations on a white background as her place setting, she is showcasing food in a colorful and inspiring way, not to mention delighting the foodie in all of us!

Food styling is an art in itself, as the creator wants to portray the deliciousness and heart that is put into the food through the photos that are taken. Color, shape, texture and food compatibility are all taken into account when coming up with the initial design, but many other factors such as lighting play a role as well. Dietlind Wolf’s work manages to perfectly convey her passion for food through the designs she creates. By playing off of the many colors and textures that make up these dishes, she is creating a story to go along with these beautiful foods.

Another artist that combines art and food is Hazel Zakariya. Coming from Malaysia, she uses smoothie bowls as her canvas to create delicious and dainty art pieces. She creates portraits of animals and pop-culture characters by “painting” with natural ingredients such as turmeric, blue matcha, and activated charcoal. To paint these scenes she uses wooden skewers and a table knife, which makes it even more impressive that she is able to create such realistic images.

Hazel uses a variety of other ingredients as well in order to recreate certain textures for each portrait. Various fruits, berries, seeds, and even flower petals are used to decorate the bowls, so one can only imagine how delicious they must taste! Check out her Instagram for more of her work.

The Versatility of the Wide Leg Pants

Categories: Beauty & Fashion|

It’s no wonder that everywhere I go I see wide leg pants rocking the scene. From denim to flowy dress pants they are a great look for all body types. Along with looking sharp, they offer a level of comfort like no other pant style. If you like what you see but think things like, I am too short to wear the wide leg pant style, you’d be wrong. Fashion is like any type of design, in my opinion, be bold and attack it with confidence!

Let’s visit a few examples of executing this style with the attitude – I can ROCK it, too!

Wide legged pant style is trending for summer 2018.

There really are no rules in this fashion look, but we all have a level of comfort to how we want any pant style to fit us. I personally need to go all loose or fitted at the top due to being short bodied and long legged. I always feel I need to elongate my body and the cool thing about the wide leg pants style is they have all fits, you just need to find the right feel for you.

Having the upper section lose and belted calls out for a more fitted top to find the fashion balance needed to pull off the fullness of the pants. It also requires a longer torso or it could leave you looking broader than you would like.

Wide legged pant style can work at for any occasion.

I love a simplistic t-shirt with the tailored top, wide leg pants style. With this look, only the legs flare out, this too would elongate the torso and work well for the shorter torso person.

The wide legged pant style makes the simple t-shirt rock.

A flowy jumpsuit can work well for a more dressy occasion and looks great on everyone.

Like with any style, with the right attitude of confidence, you can be right on trend with the wide leg pants style!

Interior Design; Using the Outside Views

Categories: Design, Interiors|

One should never disregard the outside views when designing the inside interiors as they should complement one another. This type of forethought is managed through critical design thinking, especially with new home builds and begins at the design phase of the project. Even in renovations, thought should be given to encompassing the outside views cohesively with the inside décor. You might be thinking, how does one go about doing this, and I would say a team approach. Working with a team of professional is always the best approach to the best design outcome. The architect, interior designer, landscape architect are all needed for input and expertise for a well thought out design.

Interior Design with Views

The views in this townhome were of the beautiful Atlantic ocean and were not to be ignored. I designed with natures subject matter as seen through the windows. The glass island top had a pattern of waves and the color of the ocean, helping to bring the element of water to the inside interior design.

I created open shelves as seen at the beverage bar with an integral stemware holder built into the live edge shelf. This material reminded me of the driftwood found on the sandy beaches just outside.

When There Isn’t a View

When there is not an amazing view, it’s the perfect excuse to make an outdoor living area that compliments the interior design. The pool just beyond the window is reflected in the strategically placed 9 glass bunching tables to bring the reflection of the pool water inside. Water is therapeutic and calming and it is always my desire to emphasize it when designing home interiors.

Home interior is nothing but a box without a view. Any time I am asked to consult on a renovation I quickly assess the possibility to enlarge a window and bring the outside inside. Natural lighting alone is reason enough and everything else is just an added bonus!

Bathroom Renovation; Visually Expanding the Space

Categories: Bath, Design|

Turning a small master bathroom renovation into a visually larger space is done by tricking the eye to visually see the space larger.

This bathroom began as a green-walled monster, literally. The shower was in front of a window, walled in and cutting off the full potential of natural light shining in. The closet was only accessible from the bedroom which meant that one would have to walk out of the bathroom to get to the closet. The linen storage was not fully accessible due to a bifold door that could not completely open up to the storage.

Master Bathroom Renovation

A visual Manipulation

This home resides in a coastal community and the bathroom renovation was to take a green-walled bathroom and transform it into a coastal vibe.  I always like to start with the right background color and to me, it just needed to be white and calming. Once that was established I layered out from there.

It’s All in the Fine Details

The little details of any design are what makes the design special. The blue decorative tile I used for the shower wall became a “wow factor” to build off of. Designing the back wall of the niche with the decorative blue tile is one of those special details. I also chose the decorative lighting sconces because the detail in the metal matched the pattern seen on the shower tiled wall pulling the design elements together.

The hardware was simplistic and had the shape of the sconces. I liked the crisp feel of the polished chrome finish.

Popping a Warm Color

The cherry on top of the design is the pop of a warm color I introduced to the design on the closet walls and the fabric chair. Every design needs something to ignite excitement and the hot coral hue did just that.
